THE PASSING OF AN OLYMPIAN - VAL BEITZEL (NEE ROBERTS)
It is with great sadness that Gymnastics Australia reports the passing of one of their most treasured Life Members, Val Beitzel.

Over a thirty year span commencing in the 1950's, Val made a tremendous contribution to the development of gymnastics in Australia as an athlete, coach, judge and administrator.

During her outstanding career, Val Beitzel will be particularly remembered for her strong and dynamic leadership of the Women's Artistic Gymnastics Program in the 1970's and 80's where as National Women's Technical Director she championed the development of women's sport and in particular Women's Gymnastics.

Following her retirement from the sport, Val maintained a strong interest in gymnastics attending many events and in particular showing great pleasure in the improvement of Australian gymnastics on the world stage.

Gymnastics Australia was delighted that despite her deteriorating health, Val was able to accept an invitation to present medals at the World Championships in Melbourne in November 2005.

In May 2008 at the annual GA Awards Dinner, Gymnastics Australia launched its website dedicated to the history of Women's Gymnastics in Australia. Gymnastics Australia was honoured to have Val Beitzel as one of their honoured guests on this special occasion.

Gymnastics Australia extends its sympathy to Ray and family.

The funeral service will be held at the Lilydale Memorial Park Chapel at 1.00pm on Tuesday 26th August 2008.

VALE - Valerie Beitzel (nee Roberts)
Val attended the Tate Street State School in East Geelong and completed her secondary school education at Geelong and Horsham High Schools. Val went on to complete a Diploma of Physical Education at the University of Melbourne in 1957 and was also trained as a primary school teacher at Melbourne Teachers' College.

Val was a Physical Education (PE) teacher and Head of the Department of PE and Sport for 12 years at Preston Girls' Technical School, Mentone Girls' High School and MacRobertson Girls' High School.

Later, Val became a Grade 1 Lecturer in Physical Education for six years at Rusden State College. Val also was later appointed as the National Coaching Development Officer by the Confederation of Australian Sport Coaches' Assembly.

Aside from her sporting and professional experience Val was also a company director for 25 years of Rayplas Industries.

Val had a very long and accomplished sporting history. Excluding both school and junior activities, Val played Victorian 'A" Grade Netball for a period of five years and represented Victoria at the 1958 National Netball Championships.

Val spent ten years competing in elite level women's artistic gymnastics including her involvement in the Women's Gymnastic Society, Melbourne Uni Gym Club and Melbourne YWCA. During this time Val was coached by Alf Lorbach, Mario Baggioli and Noel Punton.

Val's gymnastics results speak for themselves:-

First place in 8 state all-around championships (Vic=5, NSW=1, SA=1, WA=1), first place in 11 national apparatus championship events, runner up to national all around champion in 1960, international competitor at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and the 1966 World Championships in Dortmund.

The above results are in addition to her role as Team Captain at the 1956 Olympic Games, a role she played again in 1964 and 1966 at the above mentioned events.

Following her successful gymnastics career, Val turned her talents to coaching. She spent nine years coaching at Cheltenham Youth Club and Rusden Gymnastics Club, two years as Victorian Junior Team coach, seven years as Victorian Senior Team coach in addition to a host of national team coach positions including the World Championships in Varna in 1974, and coach/manager of the FIG Olympic Trials in Japan in 1976.

During 1970 - 1976 Val was the personal coach to all Victorian women's artistic gymnastics champions and all but one of the senior team members, two national champions and gymnasts who achieved eight national team representations.

In addition to her involvement as a coach, Val devoted fifteen years of service to the sport as a judge, State Technical Director, National Coaching Co-ordinator, National Selector and AGF Executive member. Val also served for five years as part of the Council and Technical Committee of the Confederation of Australian Sport and Australian Coaching Council.

Outside her involvement in gymnastics, Val was also a committee member, and president of the Ringwood Diving Club and Diving Australia Level 3 judge - positions she held for fifteen years.

In a long and distinguished sporting career, Val has been the recipient of many awards. These include:-

- Half blue and Full blue Netball (Melbourne Uni).
- Life Memberships of the Victorian Gymnastic Association, Australian Gymnastic Federation, Ringwood Diving Club and Victorian Diving Association.
- Recognition of Service Award from the Confederation of Australian Sport
- Roll of Honour recipient from the Australian Gymnastic Federation.
