The Australian Acrobatics team have returned home after a successful campainge in Wroclaw.
ACR World Champs & World Age review
Congratulations to the Australian Acrobatics team on a successful trip to Poland for the World Championships & World Age Championships.
Two athletes from each federation were asked to represent their countries at the opening ceremony. Representing Australia and proudly carrying the flag at the World Age Championships was Eliza Hui & Jacob Faour. At the World Championships this honour was given to Ingrid Dunkerley and Kate Ryan.
With the temperature hitting 37 Celsius in Wroclaw, the conditions were stifling with the air conditioning unable to cope in the training hall. Thankfully the conditions on the competition floor were somewhat cooler. All athletes adapted and coped extremely well in the difficult conditions, coming away with some fantastic results.
A special mention must go to the 11-16 Women's Trio of Katrina Kissock, Madelyn Bennett & Rachel Cook who qualified for the finals and finished in 8th place, a fantastic effort and result for this young trio.
The other fabulous results were as follows:
Senior Trio
Melissa Scott, Kate Ryan & Shani Meadows - 12th - qualified as 1st reserve for the finals
Annelise Olsson, Ingrid Dunkerley & Emma Briggs - 16th
12-19 Mixed Pair
Renee Blake & Jacob Faour - 18th
Congratulations must also go to Catherine Sharwood on judging at her first ever international competition.
A big thanks to all of the officials for all of their hard work on this tour - Andrew Saba, Yuriy Stepchenkov, Agnes Sajgal, Shayley Clark and Catherine Sharwood.

The Australian Commonwealth Games Association have today confirmed the 13 gymnasts nominated by Gymnastics Australia to compete at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
World championship medallists spearhead gymnastics team for Delhi
World championship medallists Lauren Mitchell, Prashanth Sellathurai and Phil Rizzo headline the 13-member Australian gymnastics team set to compete at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi this October.
The Australian women’s gymnastics team will be chasing their fourth straight team gold medal when they take to the floor at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
Mitchell, 19, was the toast of Australian gymnastics last year when she became the first Australian woman to medal in an individual apparatus final at a world championships, winning silver on the beam and floor.
Mitchell will be joined in the women’s team by fellow Beijing Olympians Georgia Bonora and Ashleigh Brennan from Victoria.
Bonora, 20, who was crowned Australian all-around champion two weeks ago, was the highest placed Australian at the Beijing Olympics finishing 13th in the all-around final.
After taking a year off to complete her Year 12 VCE studies after Beijing, Brennan has returned to the top and brings valuable Commonwealth Games experience to the team, the 19-year-old collecting team gold and a silver medal on floor at the Melbourne 2006 Games.
The women’s team will also have an injection of youth, with rising star Maryanne Monckton (15 from Newcastle) and Emily Little (16 from Western Australia) making their major championships debut.
The Australian men will be chasing their first team gold medal in Delhi, but will need to break the stronghold of England and Canada.
Four of the five team members from Melbourne 2006 return with 24-year-old Thomas Pichler from Queensland making his debut.
2006 world high bar champion Phillipe Rizzo will become the first Australian gymnast to compete at four Commonwealth Games. The 29-year-old commenced his international career at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games, and over the last three editions has added three gold, four silver and three bronze medals to his ever growing collection.
The experienced men’s team also includes 2006 Commonwealth Games all-around and rings gold medallist Joshua Jefferis, dual world championships pommel horse medallist Prashanth Sellathurai and recently crowned Australian all-around champion Sam Offord.
In rhythmic gymnastics Australia are yet to claim a team gold medal, Canada winning in 1994 and 2006 and Malaysia in 1998.
Beijing Olympian Naazmi Johnston will spearhead the three-member 2010 rhythmic team, which also includes Queensland’s Danielle Prince, and Janine Murray who immigrated from Zimbabwe to Western Australia in 2002.
Johnston produced Australia’s best ever performance at a rhythmic gymnastics world championships last year, finishing 38th in the all-around competition and was the highest-placed Commonwealth athlete.
The 21-year-old was a member of Australia’s bronze medal rhythmic team at the Melbourne 2006 Games, and will be hopeful of improving on her fourth place in the all-around.
ACGA Chief Executive Officer Perry Crosswhite said that Australia will field a very experienced gymnastics team in Delhi.
“Traditionally our gymnastics teams have been quite young, however nearly half of the selected team competed in Melbourne in 2006 and will greatly benefit from that knowledge and experience when it comes to the 2010 Games,” Crosswhite said.
“Our strength lies with our talented individual apparatus gymnasts who have all excelled on the world stage namely Phil Rizzo, Prashanth Sellathurai and Lauren Mitchell.
“As defending champions, the women will start as favourites for the team gold medal, and although the men will encounter strong opposition from England and Canada they are also expected to be in the medal mix.
“In the rhythmic competition, Naazmi Johnston will be one of our best chances for a medal.”
Men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics was first introduced at the Commonwealth Games at the 1978 Edmonton Games, reintroduced in 1990 and has been on the program ever since. Rhythmic gymnastics was added to the schedule at the Auckland 1990 Commonwealth Games.
Australian women have won two all-around gold medals courtesy of Zeena McLaughlin (1998) and Chloe Sims (2006), and eight individual apparatus gold medals.
The Australian men have won 13 individual apparatus gold medals over time and two all-around titles – Jefferis in 2006 and Andrei Kravtsov in 1998.
Kasumi Takahashi has been Australia’s sole gold medallist in the rhythmic competition, netting a superb personal total of five gold and one silver medal in 1994.
Eight gold medals in the men’s competition and six gold medals in the women’s competition will be up for grabs from October 4 to 8 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. The rhythmic competition will feature six events from October 12 to 14.

Last week GA held the International Development Program (IDP) Clinic in Perth following the Australian Championships.
WG IDP Clinic, Perth, July 12-14, 2010
An enthusiastic bunch of 92 young gymnasts attended representing 16 different High Performance programs from around the country. They came with their coaches – of which there were more than 30 in attendance; all resulting in a busy atmosphere displaying some of the greatest gymnastics talent in the country.
The clinic was lead by National Junior Development Co-ordinator Jo Richards with experienced coaches – National Coach – Peggy Liddick, WAIS coaches Nikolai Lapchine and Dmitri Kalinen and National Choreographer Stacey Umeh leading the technical direction on each apparatus.
All of the participating gymnasts actively compete in the IDP and were selected from their performances and ranking on the National IDEAL Skills test. The focus of the clinic was refining the girls basic techniques whilst also extending them in appropriate areas of advanced skill development.
The clinic was divided into two groups: Clinic 1 was the 11-13 year olds and Clinic 2 was the 9-11 year age group. Both clinics trained 5 full training sessions over the 3 days – so it was a busy schedule for their coaches!
Also held during the three days was an intensive coach’s workshop. Focus of the workshop was Uneven bars; Peggy Liddick shared with the coaches the current International direction and recommended routine composition, Dmitri Kalinen demonstrated some sound basic principles during his presentation “Teaching girls like boys on bars” and Nikolai Lapchine covered the methodology for 2 key optional skills – the double back dismount with full out and the Jaeger.
During the clinic all girls participated in the Physical testing. Congratuations to the following girls who excelled in individual tests (no mean feet with 91 gymnasts to beat!!). These girls are certainly setting a high standard:
• Chin ups: Darcy Norman (WAIS) won the test – 25 chinups in 30 seconds!
• Cast to handstands: Sophie Ward (WAIS) – 20 – great control Sophie!
• Rianna Mizzen (QAS) – 26 leg lifts in 30 seconds – fantasic Rianna!
• Georgia Godwin (MBC) was certainly speedy in the 20 m sprint with the time of 3.22 s.
• Standing broad jump: Tiahn Pesterey won with a massive jump 86cm longer than her standing height. WOW!
• Brittany Engellener (Jetts) sprinted up the 6m rope climb in only 11.78 seconds – well done!
• Both Scarlett Vizec (VWHPC) and Emma Curry (MLC) could do 12 kip to handstands in a row with great form!
• Little Demitria Andrellos (SA Gym-jets) again was outstanding with a handstand balance over 3 minutes!
• Emily Haskayne performed an impressive 32 press to handstands in a row!
But in the end the following girls won the honour of being the best physically prepared gymnasts for each age group:
• 13 years: Georgia Godwin (MBC), Sophie Ward and Megan Aspinall (WAIS)
• 12 years: Emma Curry (MLC), Abbie Benstead (MBC) and Desnee Richter (Epping YMCA)
• 11 years: Eden Tarvit and Rianna Mizzen (QAS), Darcy Norman (WAIS)
• 10 years: Demitria Andrellos (SA Gymjets), Aya Meggs and Nikita Hains (WAIS)
• 9 years: Izabella Kay (Buritz), Aliesha Koloi (QAS) and Charlotte Quirk (WGC)
Other highlights from the clinic included:
• Team Future Squad 2010 and Team Future High Achievers 2010 for the Jan-June period were announced.
• Allana Slater (2000, 2004 Olympian) gave expert coaching tips on the tumble track during the clinic
• 2008 Olympian Olivia Vivian was on hand to assist with presentations at the clinic wrap-up and Lauren Mitchell was seen giving some advice to the young gymnasts during the 3 days.
• The clinic wrapped up girls with a demonstration by the girls with some outstanding skills – congratulations girls! Then all girls performing their dance that they had been working on with National Team Choreographer – Stacey Umeh
Look out in future editions of GA Latest news for more information about the Team Future and Team Future High Achiever squads, the skills and dance that the girls performed at the conclusion of the clinic along with some revealing interviews with our up-and-coming Team Future stars!

Gymnastics Victoria extends an invitation to all Men's Gymnastics clubs to come to Melbourne and participate in the 2010 National Clubs Championships.
Victoria to host MG National Clubs
The event will be staged in the Victorian school holidays form the 28th September – 1st October at the renowned Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. It is a team competition based on the national levels system, with modified competition divisions. The competition rules allow athletes to compete in a level higher than they are currently registered to enable clubs to enter full teams in all divisions. Clubs are encouraged to offer this experience to as many athletes as possible.
The following information has been released on the Gymnastics Victoria website:
The official event website will be launched in the coming weeks and will include full details including an event preview, ticket prices and general information. Clubs seeking further information about the event are encouraged to contact the Gymnastics Victoria Events Department on the details below:
South Australian Sam Offord has successfully defended his Australian all-around title, defeating Queensland's Tom Pichler in an enthralling contest at the AIS Arena in Canberra.
Offord claims back-to-back national titles in thriller
With only five positions available on the Australian team for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, this was the final opportunity for Australia’s top male gymnasts to make an impression in front of selectors.
The 2010 Australian Men’s Gymnastics Championships also doubled as the first selection trials for the 2010 world championships – the first qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Pichler headed into tonight’s all-around final with a slight lead over Offord, the pre-event favourite, after Wednesday night’s preliminary round.
The lead exchanged hands on a number of occasions throughout the competition and with just one apparatus remaining, Pichler hit the front by just one point.
Heading into the last rotation, the two gymnasts encountered their favourite apparatus. Offord managed to stick his pet event, the rings, and Pichler executed a quality pommel routine, but it wasn’t good enough, Offord stealing the gold medal and the national title 172.400 to 171.350.
“I’m really happy to win,” Offord said. “I take a lot of pride competing for my state, and the national championships are something that I really compete well in.”
“Today was really good. I went over to Tom and the end of his pommel routine and said that was probably one of the best competitions I have been involved in.
“To know that we were neck and neck the whole way is really pleasing ahead of Commonwealth Games.”
Victorian Luke Wadsworth collected the bronze medal with 168.450.
Japanese guest and three-time Olympian Naoya Tsukahara proved why he is one of the world’s best, taking out the competition overall with 175.00 points, but given his residential status was not eligible for the Australian title.
Dual world championships medallist Prashanth Sellathurai lived up to his reputation as the ‘prince of the pommel’ with a world-class routine of 16.150 to take the pommel horse national title.
In other apparatus finals, Pichler was too strong on floor (14.550) and parallel bars (14.500), Offord reigned on rings (15.300), Wadsworth was too good on vault (15.175) and Luke Wiwatowski from New South Wales nailed his high bar routine with a 14.750 to secure gold.
Recovering from an elbow injury, reigning Commonwealth Games all-around champion Josh Jefferis only competed on parallel bars tonight, notching up a score of 13.950.
In the men’s junior all-around, Victoria’s Tyson Bull (156.900) defeated Youth Olympic Games-bound Queenslander Brody-Jai Hennessy (153.800) and fellow Victorian Kevin James (152.500).
